On December 6, 1989 an enraged gunman roamed the corridors of Montreal's École Polytechnique and killed 14 women. Marc Lepine, 25, separated the men from the women and before opening fire on the classroom of female engineering students he screamed, "I hate feminists." Almost immediately, the Montreal Massacre became a galvanizing moment in which mourning turned into outrage about all violence against women.
On December 2nd, 2009 the York Community will be commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. As we remember the attack on these 14 women, who were directly targeted for the simple reason that they were women in a profession that was dominated by men it is crucial that we recognize the many ways that violence against women is perpetrated and woven into the fabric of our society. Whether it is the systemic underfunding of childcare or the under-reporting of sexual assaults on campus, it is critical that we take action as a community and that we not stand silent as members of our society continue to experience violence in its many forms. To commemorate these murders, and all violence against women, there will be a panel discussion on the everyday systemic violence women face, followed by a candle light vigil to be held outside of Vari Hall.
